Dear fans and friends— You may have noticed our silence and absence in the year 2019. I want to share with you all why we haven’t been working this year. In late March, my life changed forever. My mother was diagnosed very quickly with stage IV metastatic lung cancer. It was a devastating blow to our entire family, especially for me, as she was my entire world and also the only living parent I had left. Due to the severity of her prognosis, I made the decision to leave the road and take a hiatus from music to return home and take care of her in her final days, and my stepfather, too. My stepdad’s health was also declining, and after saying goodbye to Mama, he declined even more rapidly. Heartbreakingly, we said goodbye to him as well, only four months later in August. I have never felt more disoriented, lost, empty and numb in my life. Within a matter of months, what was left of my foundation was completely gone, and it was hard for me to imagine moving forward, in life much less in music, as they were my foundation and my mother was the centerpiece of my musical existence. How can I do this without her? How can I do anything without them? Right now, I’m taking some time to grieve and heal. But I will come back, because that’s what she would want me to do. A wise man said to me, “A woman is born twice: once at birth and again when she loses her mother.” How true these words are for me. There will be a second record. There will be a rebirth. I can’t say where we’ll go, but we’re continuing the journey. Stay tuned. In the meantime, know that you all have my love and gratitude.
